Celebrate spring with your preschooler! The days are getting longer as the world tilts ever so slightly towards light. The air feels warmer too making it the perfect time to celebrate the beauty of this new season with your preschooler. As the flowers start to bloom and the trees grow new leaves, it’s a wonderful opportunity to explore the outdoors together and embrace all the exciting changes that spring brings. The world feels fresh and alive, and there’s so much to see, touch, and discover. Follow your child’s lead for spotting butterflies or watching the rain shower down. Spring is a season full of magical moments to share.
Spring is all about renewal, and what better way to celebrate spring with your preschooler than by planting a little garden? You can teach them about how plants grow, let them dig in the dirt, discover worms and watch the seeds sprout into flowers or vegetables. It’s a hands-on way to learn about nature, and they’ll love getting their hands a little messy while taking part in the process. Plus, seeing their little plants grow every day can be a source of pride and excitement as they watch something they helped nurture come to life.

The weather is perfect for outdoor adventures, and spring is the ideal time to explore local parks, take nature walks, or have a picnic on the grass. As you wander through the neighborhood, look for the first signs of spring—budding trees decorated with pick future confetti, rain puddles and even little critters like squirrels and rabbits. Once hesitant, birdsong now rings clearer filling the morning air. These simple outings that celebrate spring with your preschooler offer endless opportunities for learning and talking about the changes that happen in the world around you. Plus, fresh air and sunshine are great for both of you!
Spring is also a time to get creative with arts and crafts. With all the beautiful colors and patterns of the season, you can make spring-themed projects painting flowers, creating butterfly handprints, or even crafting paper kites. These activities celebrate spring with your preschooler encouraging them to express themselves artistically while fostering their fine motor skills. And when you hang up their artwork, it’s a sweet reminder of how spring has come to life through their eyes.

Finally, spring is a wonderful time to celebrate togetherness and new beginnings. Throw open the windows, place a sprig of flowering forsythia on the kitchen table. As you celebrate spring with your preschooler, take a moment to reflect on the simple joys—like feeling the warmth of the sun or hearing the sounds of nature. There’s something magical about experiencing the world through the eyes of a child, and spring offers so many opportunities to make memories and share the excitement of this vibrant season. Welcome to spring, a time of wonder, growth, and love!
To close, I invite you to enjoy a charming excerpt written by one of my favorite writers, Nancy Young, from her family’s beautifully created bi-monthly magazine, The Storybook Home Journal, as she reminisces upon springtimes of her childhood.
“Christmas is undeniably the Child’s Day, but Spring is irrefutably the Child’s Season. Like children, every smidgen of nature is awake and alive. Everything talks at once and over the top of each other. Everything laughs. Everything is a surprise – and Easter is its centerpiece. Of course, in my childhood, Easter meant coloring eggs in shades of tender-greens, blossom-pinks, and sky-blues in the evening; and then hunting for them in the morning. But it also meant one special toy as good as Santa could have delivered which was expected to occupy the spring and summer.
It meant a new dress as far removed from winter-woolens as could be conjured; and dainty socks and a pair of patent-leather Mary Janes that dangled high above the chapel floor when I was seated on a pew.”
May you and your child also create treasured memories to share as you welcome in the blossoming season of spring.

The Happy Day picture book by Ruth Krauss peeks in on forest animals as they are fast asleep in their winter homes. When the animals wake up, they discover a bright and welcomed surprise that makes them want to celebrate the coming of spring! Inspired by The Happy Day, Golden Days at Home created a full week teach at home early childhood lesson plan based on this exciting Caldecott Honor Book. Share this springtime book with your child then teach & learn together.
